North Star At Home Based Business

I love working from my home office — but I have to tell you, at times I do get scattered. There can be way more distractions in my top home business than there ever were back in the days of occupying my cubicle.

So when I find myself doing everything but actual “work”, I know it’s time to get back to the fundamental of “focus”.

1. Create a to-do list. This is one of the best tools I have for creating a structure to my day and to keep me on target. It is just as important if you’re just getting started or if you’ve been in an at home based business awhile. And it really doesn’t matter what form it takes. Even though I am tapped in to just about every electronic device known — I still prefer to write my to-do list on a pad reserved for just that purpose. I also start each month, each week, and each day — reviewing what needs to be done. Include all of your goals at the top so you stay laser-beam sharp!

2. Shut the door. While this seems pretty obvious, you’d be surprised how often it doesn’t get closed behind you. Closing the door signals to the kids, the dogs, the neighbors — that you are really working and most of the time it works to block out the casual interruptions. If you’re not lucky enough yet to have a room with a door — try posting a do not disturb sign prominently so people in the family know you’re really trying to get things accomplished.

It helps when they know you are building a top home based business and/or trying to earn extra money from home for the family. It especially helps when they know WHEN they can talk to you. So a work from home company “do not disturb” sign may be a big help to you and be sure to put a time on it when you will allow “appointments!”

3. Get some noise-buster headphones. This is one of my favorite focus tools. I have a pair of “Plane Quiets” that I originally got to block out noise when I was flying so much. Now I use them to block out other noises at my home based small business. Both my husband and I work from home and even though our offices are far apart, I can hear my husband on conference calls. These have been a God-send for me to be able to block out the noise of phone conversation and of video conferencing. Mine are “white noise” — other’s like to listen to their favorite music. It’s up to you, but these really work!
