North Star At Home Based Business

Chances are if you’re just initiating your new at home based business you’ve recognized that there are various things about it you absolutely love. Like there’s no boss checking your every move, your daily commute of hours has suddenly given you back so much time, the dress code is whatever you want it to be for the day — maybe you like sweat pants and a t-shirt, so you’re pretty much calling the shots on your schedule at your work from home company. Cool!

As the weeks and months go by though, you might get a feeling that your losing your mind every once in awhile. There may be times when you seem to not be as focused as you normally are and feeling completely scattered.  It’s as if you can’t concentrate on the task at hand.  It happens – you’re the one in charge and suddenly you decide you need to fold a load of clothes, or clean out a junk drawer, or organize the closet, or run to the grocery store, or take the kids to soccer, or work on your business plan, or plan the dinner party for Friday, or update your website, or take the dog to the groomer?  Whew!

To fight this feeling and get back on track, here are several of my very most important hints to keep your home based small business life flowing harmoniously:

First and foremost – get some structure into your life. You need to figure out what is going to work best for you.  If you’ve decided to build your top home based business so that you can have the freedom of setting your own time lines and work assignments, that’s fine!  But determine what should get done during the week, put it in the order of most important first, then plan your week with the end in mind.

Perhaps you can plan your mornings to be all work and no play or other distractions. You get yourself to your home office — which could be your kitchen table, and you work.  Do NOT start your day answering emails, except? The only reason to check email is to see if any new orders have come in overnight that should be attended to, and/or critical customer relations, marketing issues. You should be able to know immediately which are critical and which are other things — the other things should wait until they are on your schedule!

If morning is the part of day that’s most advantageous to contact your customers, do it then. Get the important things out of the way first. Be sure to use some kind of contact management software or other program that helps manage your calendar to so you can organize what you’ve done throughout the day and can get a feeling of accomplishment when you check off the items on your to-do-list at close of business. (I’m certain you have a daily to-do-list – - right? If you answered no, that’s the first tip for getting your top home based business singing like a well oiled machine.)

The second thing I suggest is to keep building and expanding your associate network. This might be slightly more difficult if you’re just beginning your home based business but have gotten in the grove of staying at home. Beginning a routine of getting out to meet and talk with people, seeking to build those relationships, that is so important to the growth of your home based business.

Whether you’re a business home Internet marketing company, a work from home mom, or in the dog training business from your home, in almost all cases, it’s very important to build and develop relationships with people with whom you will be doing business.

Finally – acknowledge small, medium, and large successes!  It is important to take some time to (a) celebrate your progress, even if they are small and (b) take the time recognize them while you earn extra money from home.  It might be that you have been worried over some problem and spent an inordinate amount of time to find the just the right idea.  When you do, recognize your success and celebrate it! 

Your celebrations don’t have to be  big, but they do have to be recognizable as celebrations.  Be sure to reward yourself with something meaningful to you — a movie, or trip to the ice-cream shop.  Share your results and success with your family — they’ll appreciate being kept up to date, in the “loop”, and it’s a lot more fun to share successes!

Just keep in mind these three hints for your business harmony — develop a structure for your time, cultivate your network, and celebrate successes — even the small ones!
